The HRIDAY-SHAN programme follows the philosophy that education imparted to people, makes them aware about various health issues. This awareness needs to be supported by appropriate skills to be provided to this well informed group of youth and adults. The SHAN component of the programme provides advocacy skills to the youth and motivates them to become effective health activists who can voice their demands on health related issues. This aspect of programme also enables these youth activists to develop a sense of ownership for these activities. Such interactions conducted regularly lead to a sustainable programme of health education and advocacy. Three outcomes of these efforts: (awareness, skills and ownership) bring about a positive change in terms of adopting healthy practices and changing governmental policies towards health promotion. Education and activism together form a comprehensive programme of school health education.

Through Orientation Workshops for Teachers
Teachers have always been a key component of HRIDAY-SHAN programs. They not only act as friend, philosopher and guide, but also serve as a role model for students. Acknowledging their importance in influencing young minds, HRIDAY-SHAN developed a model of school health programme that is primarily lead by teacher and peer leaders. Teachers are instrumental in coordinating and conducting health promotion programs in their respective schools and colleges. They also ensure that sustainability and ownership of these programmes is maintained. Since they belong to diverse disciplines, HRIDAY-SHAN conducts an "Orientation Workshop" to sensitize them on various health related issues; train them on implementing various designed activities; and effectively disseminate the information. Teacher Training Manual (TTM) is used as an effective IEC resource for training teacher coordinators.

Through Peer to peer learning
The edifice of HRIDAY- SHAN is built on strong foundation of well trained student peer leaders. Peer leaders lead act invities can go a long way in bringing about a positive change among the youth and motivating them for health advocacy. As every student discusses and understands issues related to health and development, it not only positively alter their knowledge on health issues and change their attitudes towards health promotion, but also makes health promotion an acceptable norm at the individual level. This enables the youth network to grow bigger, better and stronger.

Through intra and inter school/ college competitions on various health related issues
HRIDAY- SHAN organizes various intra- and inter-school and college debate, story, poetry and essay competitions on various related themes. These activities aim at sensitizing and orienting youth on contemporary health issues; motivate them to research topics, collect data and enable them to analyze the information in the correct manner. These interactions and activities facilitate the attitudes and commitments to be radiated and adopted by other peers.

Community Mobilization by Students
'Humne Seekha Hai (We have Learnt)' is one of the most appreciated community health awareness programme organized by HRIDAY-SHAN. In this programme students develop interesting and innovative health related message in attractive pictorial (poster) format each conveying crucial message through 'Health Art'. The aim of the activity is to promulgate health related knowledge, gained by them at school, to the community at large and initiate suitable actions.
