Global Youth Met Prepares charter on health

HT Next November 20 2006 New Delhi

A New global health advocacy charter titled ‘Youth for Health’ (Y4H) was presented to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the Capital on Sunday. The charter is the result of four days of intensive deliberation during Global Youth Meet (GYM) 2006 held in Agra and Delhi recently.

Wen Xing from Singapore and Prashant Gupta from India represented the 220 delegates from around 36 that attended the meet and presented the charter to the chief minister.

Recognising the efforts that went in the formulation of the charter and the subsequent movement, Dikshit pledged her support to the cause. “The youth have come forward and we will follow what they have advised us to do”, she said.

The charter, which is the output of interaction between 70 national and international experts and the youth, resolves to: create a Y4H movement with the objective of promoting health advocacy for policies that can protect the present and future health of generations; connect young persons form across the world to form a global alliance of young health advocates; and collectively campaign on common causes involving tobacco control, curbing of alcohol and drug abuse, HIV and road safety.

Dr. K. Srinath Reddy, executive director, HRIDAY-SHAN , which organized Gym said , “The aim is to ensure that the youngsters see themselves as agents of social change.”
