WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 2003

On the eve of World No Tobacco Day, school students of Delhi, who are involved in activities of organisation: HRIDAY-SHAN , met the Honourable Health Minister of India, on May 30, 2003 with over 50000 signatures collected by them in support of the theme for WNTD, 2003. These students have been working for the last two months on sensitizing their peer group, parents and teachers on issues related to tobacco control and also emphasized on how the film and fashion world is contributing to promoting tobacco use. As a result of this sensitization programme, they successfully formed three activist groups: SAT (Students Against Tobacco), Parents Against Tobacco (PAT) and Teachers Against Tobacco (TAT). They motivated these three groups to write appeals supporting the WNTD theme this year and then circulated these appeals among the community members to disseminate awareness about the issue and collect signatures. In Delhi, 96 schools (60 private and 36 public) and 8 colleges participated in this signature campaign.

Students were also trained for media advocacy by HRIDAY-SHAN during their involvement in this anti-tobacco campaign. The students used the learnt knowledge and skills by writing letters to various film stars, film directors, script writers and lyric writers , requesting them to ensure that our films become free from tobacco. They also wrote to Central Board for Film Certification requesting them to strictly enforce the guidelines while issuing certificates to the films to censor, tobacco promoting scenes.

Student representatives participated in a brainstorming session wherein they discussed various issues related with influence of projecting tobacco use in films and fashion world. They discussed on the suggested guidelines of Central Board of Film Certification regarding certification of films. They discussed tobacco industry's tactics that form the basis of these false projections. Subsequent to this brainstorming session students formulated a list of recommendations that they submitted to the Honourable Health Minister along with an appeal to ensure that our film and fashion world can be free from tobacco projections.

Honourable Health Minister of India, Mrs. Sushma Swaraj commended the students for their efforts. She encouraged these young tobacco control activists and guided them to assist the Government in ensuring that the Indian Tobacco Control Act, 2003, becomes effectively enforced.

This student delegation presented their work on anti-tobacco campaign to the Honourable President of India on June 2, 2003 and submitted an appeal requesting the Honourable President of India to lead India to the status of a Tobacco Free Society. The President congratulated the students for their efforts and encouraged them to further expand their anti-tobacco movement to help others.

The President said that parents who smoked at home affected their children both as role models and as sources of passive smoking. He said it was important to persuade parents, especially fathers, to give up tobacco. Children must persuade their parents to do so and they should be helped in this task by teachers and health professionals.

The President also shared his vision of a developed nation where the problem of poverty would be alleviated. He wanted school children to catalyse social transformation through activities like educating uneducated persons and planting trees. Such constructive activities would contribute to sustainable development, he said, while also keeping the mind away from harmful substances like tobacco.

The students also presented to the President, a Student Charter on the Health of Our Land (SCHOOL), in which they profiled their generation's perspective on issues like, safe drinking water, healthy diets, promotion of physical activity, protection of environment, avoidance of tobacco, minimization of violence and promotion of peace. The President appreciated their vision and asked them to act with conviction and commitment for the attainment of those goals.
