Tobacco use Among Young Persons Belonging to Low Socio Economic Groups in Urban India: Dimensions, Determinants and Dynamics of Behaviour Change through a Community Based Intervention

HRIDAY has a decade long extensive experience of working with school going students of 300 schools in Delhi and 9 other states of India, on preventing and reducing tobacco use among youth. Now HRIDAY-SHAN has adopted its health promotion and health advocacy model for the youth living in urban slums of Delhi with the intent of promoting tobacco cessation among them. In this context HRIDAY – SHAN conducting a research project entitled “Tobacco use Among Young Persons Belonging to Low Socio Economic Groups in Urban India: Dimensions, Determinants and Dynamics of Behaviour Change through a Community Based Intervention”.

The project was planned to be completed in three phases. Phase-I was conducted in two slum communities in Delhi, which included exploratory discussions to recognize the problem of tobacco use among youth. At present HRIDAY, plans to implement Phase-II of the project, which was supported by CCDC (Centre for Chronic Disease Control).
The goal of this project was to develop, implement and evaluate the cost effectiveness of a multi-component, community based intervention programme for promoting tobacco cessation among young persons (ages 10-19 years), belonging to low SES, in Delhi. In Phase-II, a demonstration project has been conducted in two slum communities of Delhi i.e in Seelampur and in Gautampuri.

Youth Led Initiatives on Tobacco Avoidance and Watchdogging of Tobacco Control Laws through HRIDAY-SHAN Network
The goal of this project was to mobilize students of 300 schools and 10 colleges of Delhi to form action groups in their schools and neighbourhood community to support issues related to tobacco control and to ensure effective enforcement of tobacco control laws in Delhi. The project aimed at initiating efforts at school level to form four well informed groups: Students Against Tobacco (SAT), Parents Against Tobacco (PAT), Teachers Against Tobacco (TAT) & Community Against Tobacco (CAT) and also to frame policies towards creating tobacco free schools and involving community to ensure effective enforcement of Indian Tobacco Control Act 2003.

Extending HRIDAY-SHAN programme to colleges (July 2002)

To bridge the gap between school and college, HRIDAY-SHAN extended its programme to 10 colleges of Delhi. The essence of this effort is to ensure that college students are sensitized to opt for healthy living habits for themselves and for their families. The programme also focuses on imparting appropriate advocacy skills to this forceful group to demand health promoting policies.

Environment has been an important thrust area in all HRIDAY programme. HRIDAY has successfully influenced the knowledge of the school children on various environmental themes, through various projects conducted under the auspices of World Health Organization, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Environment and Forests, with 300 HRIDAY-SHAN schools in Delhi.

Adaptation of HRIDAY-SHAN Model for Tobacco Control Programmes Involving Youth in Other Metropolitan Cities of India

HRIDAY extended the HRIDAY-SHAN programmes to 3 other metropolitan cities of India: Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad to evaluate the effectiveness of HRIDAY-SHAN programme to three other metros of India and to compare the experiences in other cities with the experiences of these programmes in Delhi, where HRIDAY has already shown promise in preventing the onset of tobacco use among Indian adolescents

OBJECTIVES

• To disseminate the HRIDAY-SHAN model of informed health action, by school students for Tobacco Control (developed and evaluated at Delhi) to three other metropolitan cities in Indian .

• To enhance the capacity of health/development NGOs in these cities to initiate and    support such school, home and community based programmes which would be conducted by school students, with the help of teachers coordinators.  

• To increase the knowledge and positively influence the attitude and practices of students and teachers (at school level) and of parents and other adults (at the community level) regarding tobacco control.

Year 2005

Disseminating Information about the Ill Effects of Tobacco Use and Tobacco Control Legislation through All India Network in 5 cities of India

HRIDAY-SHAN continued HRIDAY-SHAN’s model of school health education in 5 cities of India in 2005. The project mobilized school students of 5 cities in India for disseminating awareness on tobacco control and health and to approach state level government for effective enforcement of tobacco control law and other health promoting policies. To achieve this HRIDAY-SHAN has created a network of well informed student, parent and teacher health activists in 5 cities who will work towards health promoting policies and practices conducive to their present and future health.

Establishing a Tobacco Free University in India

HRIDAY-SHAN in collaboration with the faculty and   students of the Annamalai University declared the university as a Tobacco Free Educational Institution (TOFREDIN).TOFREDIN campaign has been launched by the university under the leadership of National Service Scheme (NSS) programme. As part of launch of this campaign, the university has also announced a diploma course in tobacco control available to students both on-site and by correspondence. HRIDAY-SHAN provided technical guidance in formulating syllabus for this course.

Year 2005 -2006

Health Promoting Institutions: Schools and colleges

HRIDAY-SHAN developed guidelines on themes: Diet and Nutrition, Promoting Physical Activity, Protecting Environment. Avoiding addictions such as tobacco and issued these to schools and colleges in Delhi. Various intra school and college level activities were conducted as part of these which motivated the students to voice their demands to make their school and college campus and surroundings health promoting.
