Project MYTRI: Mobilising Youth for Tobacco Related Initiatives in India
MYTRI (Mobilising Youth for Tobacco Related Initiatives in India) is a research project designed to test the effectiveness of a tobacco prevention programme among youth in India. The project aims to prevent the onset and reduce the prevalence of tobacco use among youth in India. The project is being conducted in collaboration between the University of Minnesota, USA and HRIDAY (Health Related Information Dissemination Amongst Youth), New Delhi, India. MYTRI is a two-year intervention study being conducted in 32 randomly selected schools in two cities of India: Delhi and Chennai. 16 schools are enrolled in each city, as per these characteristics: 8 Private Co-Educational, 2 Government Boys-only, 2 Government Girls-only and 4 Government Co-Educational.

Out of the 16 schools in each of the two cities, 8 were randomly allocated into the ‘Intervention Group’ and 8 were randomly allocated into the ‘Delayed Intervention Group’. Students of classes 6 and 8 were covered in Year 1 of the intervention (2004-05) and the same cohort of students was followed in Year 2 of the intervention (2005-06), in classes 7 and 9.

Students of classes 6 and 8 in both the Intervention and the Delayed Intervention schools were administered a baseline student survey at the beginning of the academic year (2004-05). This was followed by implementation of the MYTRI classroom curricula (year 1) in the Intervention Schools.

Post intervention year 1, in both the Intervention and the Delayed Intervention Schools, an intermediate survey was administered to the same cohort of students (now in classes 7 and 9), at the beginning of the next academic year (2005-06). This was followed by implementation of the year 2 MYTRI classroom curricula in the Intervention Schools.

Post intervention year 2, a final endline student survey was conducted with the cohort (now in classes 8 and 10) at the beginning of the academic year 2006-07.

INTERVENTION
The MYTRI classroom curricula comprises of interactive classroom activities which aim to create awareness regarding issues related to tobacco use and impart advocacy skills to students to enable them to articulate their demands for a tobacco-free school, home and community. The MYTRI intervention material includes manuals for Teachers, Peer Leaders, handbooks for all students, school posters and parent postcards. Teachers and Peer Leaders were extensively trained to administer these activities in the classroom. Before implementation, all the intervention material was extensively pilot tested.
